The Inititative

Rethinking

the Night

The night-time economy forms an essential pillar of urban life, encompassing far more than entertainment alone. From mobility and healthcare to logistics, hospitality, culture, and creative industries, these diverse activities keep cities vibrant and functioning after dark.

Shared Urban Challenges

Managing this complex ecosystem presents local authorities with shared challenges: ensuring safety and inclusion, balancing residents’ well-being with economic and cultural vitality, protecting venues and creative spaces, addressing environmental concerns including noise and light pollution, and optimizing the use of public and green spaces.

The Goals

Global Cities After Dark emerges as an international program to connect, support, and inspire cities worldwide as they navigate nighttime economy development.

Building on the success of the EU’s URBACT-funded Cities After Dark network, the first co-funded initiative for integrated nighttime strategies, this expanded global effort extends the concept to an international scale.

Collaboration & Best Practices

Through this platform, cities could share best practices and governance models to foster vibrant, sustainable and inclusive night-time environments. The global network serves as a hub for pilot projects, collaborative policymaking on nocturnal issues, and advocacy to raise awareness of the night-time economy as a key driver of sustainable urban development.

Unlocking the Night’s Potential

Global Cities After Dark helps cities in moving beyond isolated strategies toward a coordinated approach that recognizes the night as a space for opportunity, innovation, and sustainable growth. By learning from one another, cities can unlock the full potential of the night-time economy while ensuring safety, sustainability, and quality of life for all urban residents.
